Barry Town Vets over 55s got their season back on track with a comfortable victory over visitors Penybont last Sunday at Jenner Park, and in doing so went some way to erasing memories of their first defeat for over a year against main rivals Swansea in their last outing.
Barry, fielding a depleted squad, were more organised and motivated than the visitors and as a result were the better side for much of the game. Staddon, Jones, Gibbs and Gibbins were composed in defence, whilst Price, Welsh and particularly Dyke and Dupuy were winning the midfield battle, although in the first half neither keeper was troubled. The hosts lost former Cardiff City captain Gibbins to a shoulder injury before the break but Brown stepped in seamlessly.
In the second half the hosts were again the bigger threat, and when former Barry player White was given a straight red by the official in an otherwise competitive but clean match, they were able to stretch the opposition further. Scorio Jones took full advantage, striding forward unchallenged to the edge of the box, where he unleashed a thunderbolt into the corner of the net to give the home side a deserved lead.
Strikers Bobbett and Sanderson were finally starting to make headway and both had opportunities, but when their teammates switched off for a second at the back, it took a superb headed clearance by substitute Taylor to keep them in front. Nerves were settled minutes later when Dupuy’s fierce strike hit the roof of the net and Sanderson made the game safe with a neat header to put Barry’s title defence back in the their hands.
This Sunday 1st December at 2pm, the over 50s have a must-win game against Swansea to maintain any hope of league honours this term. The following Sunday 8th December sees the over 55s take on Merthyr in the cup, 11am KO at Jenner Park.
