Barry Town Vets over 50s have had a mixed start to the season, albeit losing two centre halves in their last match inflamed the situation. They returned to form with a bang though, defeating a strong Swansea outfit away at Gorseinon.
Barry started with real intent – Lillygreen, Sullivan, Dupuy and Taylor snapping into tackles and moving the ball quickly through midfield and Fredriksen and captain Bobbett creating havoc in attack. This pressure soon began to bear fruit when Sullivan clipped the ball neatly over the Swans keeper to put the ‘Linnets’ into the lead. Fredriksen then took centre stage, forcing his way past the home defence and crashing home from 18 yards before completing his hat-trick in a blistering 10 minute spell.
Swansea, to their credit, fought back but found Murray, Simms, Gibb and James defiant in defence leaving keeper Harding a mere spectator.
Then followed a bizarre period, orchestrated by the official, which saw the visitors lose composure when Gibb was carried from the field of play after being crudely hacked, but not before he had been penalised! Before his replacement Brown could settle, Swansea striker Walsh hit a fine shot past the Barry gloveman to make the scoreline 4-1 at the interval.
The second half was slightly frenetic with neither team ever in real control, the official again exacerbating the situation. Walsh grabbed his and Swansea’s second from the penalty spot but Fredriksen, unplayable in this mood, re-established Barry’s three goal cushion, before Bobbett also got himself on the score-sheet, coolly lobbing the Swansea keeper to make the score 6-2.
The game continued in its hectic manner and Swansea’s Kennedy tucked home from a clearly offside position! Nerves were finally settled when Dupuy’s fierce free-kick found the net to secure his team a comfortable 7-3 win.
