Wales Veterans Football proudly hosted a Testimonial match and fundraising day for one of Wales Veterans finest players over the last decade, Neil ‘Davo’ Davies, who is sadly suffering from terminal cancer.

Neil was keen to raise awareness of the illness, but also to generate much needed funds for the Macmillan Cancer UK Charity, and on Saturday 14th August at Jenner Park a Wales Veterans Representative XI took on a Neil Davies (Penydarren) XI as the centre-piece of a day of fundraising activities. The game itself was good-natured with some high quality football…and Neil himself capped off a fine personal performance with a sweetly struck penalty, to edge the match 4-3 in favour of the Merthyr Team!

The Barry Town Vets celebrate Neil Davies as he walks out onto the pitch for his testimonial and charity game

Off the pitch more success followed, thanks to the generosity of those who took part, donated cash or items for the raffle and auction. Special thanks go to Barry Town United Chairman, Mark Barratt, for his generous hospitality and significant contribution. The auction and raffle, skilfully hosted by Cardiff City legend Roger Gibbins, raised over £1500 and contributed to a grand total of £3000, for Neil’s chosen charity. Friends and teammates were also delighted to be able send Neil, who has resided in Barry for several years with his partner Helen, for a luxury spa hotel holiday in Pembrokeshire….A great player and fine human being deserved no less.
