Barry Town United vs Goytre AFC | JD Welsh Cup Second Round | Match Preview

This Saturday we turn our attention to the JD Welsh Cup as we host Goytre AFC in the second round.

The game will mark Gavin Chesterfield’s 490th game in charge of the Town, equaling Basil Bright’s tally of matches and thereby making Chesterfield our joint longest-serving manager. On September 11th Chesterfield will break the record at home to Connah’s Quay Nomads. This milestone will certainly be a cause for celebration and plans for the day will be announced over the weekend.

We look forward to welcoming back Evan Press this weekend after he signed a new contract with the club on Deadline Day. Chesterfield believes Press has ‘developed immensely’ since his debut for the Town in 2018 and supporters and players alike are no doubt ecstatic at the news of his return.

We will also be glad to see the return of Nathan Cadette on Saturday. Cadette was part of Gavin Chesterfield’s successful 2007/08 squad that was promoted from Division 2 to Division 1. This Saturday, however, Barry will be his opposition as Cadette returns to Jenner Park as the manager of a Goytre side that are unbeaten in their opening five games in the Ardal South East League and will be hoping to cause a cup upset.

Coming off the back of two entertaining and pleasing league wins against Cefn Druids (4-1) and Haverfordwest (3-2), Chesterfield and our players will hope that we can continue this run and build momentum with a win against Goytre before we return to JD Cymru Premier League action next week.

Jenner Park, and grounds around Wales, will certainly be eager to welcome Welsh Cup football back as the pandemic cancelled it in the 2020/21 season and cut the 2019/20 competition short at the semi-final stages.

Let’s hope the return of cup action and our 18 year wait to bring it back to Jenner Park acts as extra motivation to Chesterfield and the players in front of our home fans.
