The battle for European football continues to hot up in the JD Cymru Premier Championship Conference as we host Penybont this evening (kick-off 7:45pm).
Just one point separates the two sides in the table ahead of the game: we are fourth with 39 points, while the Bont sit fifth with 38.
Both teams lost 1-0 in closely-fought matches against the two title chasers on Saturday.
We were beaten away at Connah’s Quay Nomads, as a first half header from Michael Wilde proved decisive on a pitch that Gavin Chesterfield described as “like playing on the moon”.
Mike Lewis also saved a penalty from Callum Morris, and after a resilient second half performance from Barry that yielded a number of chances, we left Deeside mightily disappointed not to have earned a point.
Meanwhile, Louis Robles struck just after halftime as Penybont were defeated by The New Saints at Park Hall.
It leaves both Barry and Penybont eager to return to winning ways, having each claimed victory in the first round of phase two fixtures before losing the last two.
Tonight is the third instalment of the Five Mile Lane Derby this season, with Rhys Griffiths’s men emerging as narrow 1-0 winners in both previous encounters.
A belting strike from Sam Snaith gave Penybont all three points at Jenner Park last month before Kane Owen’s penalty proved decisive a week later.
We have fonder memories of the Bridgend outfit’s visit to Jenner last season, as goals from Clayton Green, Luke Cummings and Kayne McLaggon secured a 3-0 victory.
Looking ahead to the game, Gavin Chesterfield said:
“They’re all tough games in phase two. Penybont are having a really good season, but the hope is we show that fight, intensity and desire we did in the second half at Connah’s Quay and then add in a bit of quality. We’re looking forward to the challenge.”
Due to a Welsh Government and FAW ruling, games must currently be played behind-closed-doors until stated otherwise. Your support will be hugely missed at Jenner Park, but you will be able to follow this evening’s fixture through live updates on our Twitter page.
