Barry Town United vs Penybont | JD Cymru Premier Preview

It is the season’s first instalment of the Five Mile Lane Derby tonight as we play host to Penybont in the JD Cymru Premier (kick-off 7:45pm). The game will be shown live on Sgorio’s Facebook and YouTube channels as well as on S4C Clic.

After the league’s two and a half month hiatus, we returned to action at the weekend with a 1-0 win over Cefn Druids.

David Cotterill scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot in the 44th after Nat Jarvis had been brought down in the box.

The result kept us fourth in the Cymru Premier table on 27 points, knowing that fixtures over the next week could prove decisive in securing a spot in the top six.

We are unbeaten in our last seven games at Jenner Park (five wins, two draws), not suffering defeat on home turf since the opening weekend of the season.

Penybont are three points us behind in fifth, having enjoyed a strong season to date. After being 10th when the 2019-20 campaign was curtailed, the Bridgend side have three wins from their last five games and are now aiming for a top half finish.

Rhys Griffiths’s side have already played twice since the resumption of the Cymru Premier, losing 2-0 to Newtown last Tuesday before winning 1-0 against Flint Town United on Saturday thanks to Nathan Wood’s early strike.

We won both of our games against Penybont last season following their promotion to the top-flight in the 2018-19 campaign.

After winning 2-1 at the SDM Glass Stadium in the opening game of the season, we then claimed a 3-0 victory at Jenner Park courtesy of goals from Clayton Green, Luke Cummings and Kayne McLaggon. Current Barry pair Mikey George and Curtis Hutson were wearing the blue of Penybont that day.

Commenting on Penybont after our win over Cefn Druids, Gavin Chesterfield said:

“Penybont are having a good season, and won today [Saturday], so we look forward to the challenge. It’ll be great to be back at Jenner Park.

“We’ll look after the boys, make sure rehab is done properly and we recover well so we’re in the best possible position to go out on Tuesday and hopefully come away with another three points.”

Due to a Welsh Government and FAW ruling, games must currently be played behind-closed-doors until stated otherwise. Your support will be hugely missed at Jenner Park, but you will be able to follow this evening’s fixture on Sgorio and through live updates on our Twitter page.
