Barry Town United vs Trefelin BGC | Nathaniel MG Cup | Match Preview

This Tuesday we turn our attention to the Nathaniel MG Cup as we face Trefelin BGC at Jenner Park in the third round of the competition.

Our opponents are currently 9th in the Cymru South, winning, drawing and losing 3 of their opening 9 games of the league season. In the previous round of the cup on the opening day of the season we ran out comfortable 5-0 winners against old friends Llanelli Town.

Historically, we have had success in this cup competition. Most recently, in 2017, we reached the Cup Final but were unable to lift the trophy after a 4-0 loss to The New Saints. However, our greatest successes in the competition came in the late nineties with us winning the League Cup in four successive seasons from 1996-97 to 1999-2000.

With the abandonment of the League Cup in the 2020-21 season and our early exit in the second round of the 2019/20 Cup, both Gavin and the players will be eager for a cup run this time round. Similarly, after TNS ended our 5-game unbeaten run on Saturday, the match against Trefelin gives us an opportunity to build momentum ahead of our JD Welsh Cup game away at Cardiff Met on Saturday.
