Cardiff Metropolitan University vs Barry Town United | JD Cymru Premier Preview

We end phase one of the 2020/21 JD Cymru Premier season by making the short trip to Cardiff Metropolitan University today (kick-off 5pm).

Our magnificent 6-2 win over Bala Town last week, courtesy of goals from Kayne McLaggon (2), Evan Press (2), Chris Hugh and Curtis Hutson, was the perfect way to secure our spot in the Championship Conference for phase two.

However that does not mean that there is nothing riding on today’s game, as we look to build momentum going into the final ten fixtures and try to chase down Bala who are six points ahead in third.

Cardiff Met have found themselves struggling at the other end of the table this season, and ahead of today’s game they are 10th – just two points ahead of the bottom two.

Christian Edwards’s side are winless in their last eight matches and were beaten 3-2 by Caernarfon Town last weekend. They have scored the fewest goals in the division this season, but have conceded the fewest goals in the bottom half.

It was a superb free-kick from David Cotterill that proved decisive in our 1-0 win over the Archers earlier in the season, and it was the same scoreline on our last visit to Cyncoed Campus in December 2019, when Mo Touray struck the winner.

Looking ahead to the match, Gavin Chesterfield said:

“Regardless of who you’re playing against in this league, you can’t be off your game. I went to watch Cardiff Met against Cefn Druids the other week and I thought they played really well and were unlucky not to win the game. I know we’re going to be in for a tough game, but we’re a good team and hopefully the win over Bala will give us some momentum and impetus.”

Due to a Welsh Government and FAW ruling, games must currently be played behind-closed-doors until stated otherwise. Your support will be hugely missed at Cyncoed Campus, but you will be able to follow this afternoon’s fixture through live updates on our Twitter page.
