Tomorrow we travel to the Park Hall Stadium to face a TNS side that sit top in the JD Welsh Premier League after the opening 5 games of the season.
Gavin Chesterfield has described this Saturday’s 17:15 kick-off as always ‘a tough game’ but also noted that we’re in a ‘good place’ following 4 successive wins. After a tremendous 1-0 victory last week against reigning league champions Connah’s Quay Nomads, our players will be travelling to Oswestry full of confidence and hoping to come away with a positive result.
Our opponents have begun the season in fine form and are unbeaten coming into this match. However, at Penybont last week, the league leaders were lucky to come away with a point after Declan McManus salvaged a late goal for The New Saints thereby earning them a 1-1 draw.
Notable results during the early exchanges of this season for the league leaders include a convincing 4-1 win at Newtown as well as a 5-3 victory over Caernarfon Town on home soil. Indeed, TNS average 3 goals a game so far this term in the Cup and Cymru Premier League, a stat our defence must be wary of. Nevertheless, Gavin and the players will be confident they can keep the TNS attack quiet after a similarly impressive start to the season, having only conceded 5 goals in our opening 7 games, scoring 16 goals ourselves.
Last season, we failed to beat TNS on three occasions, in the two corresponding fixtures in Oswestry we fell 2-1 and 3-0 losers, while TNS were 6-0 victors at Jenner Park. Despite our woes against TNS in 2020/21, we have enjoyed success in previous seasons against The Saints. Notably, in the 2019/20 season, we returned to Barry from the Park Hall Stadium 1-0 victors, after an outstanding Evan Press strike from outside the box.
This weekend’s live Sgorio fixture is one in which Gavin and the players will be eager to continue our promising beginning to the season.
