£3000 raised for Macmillan Cancer Support

Following the recent success of Neil ‘Davo’ Davies’ Testimonial match and fundraising Day at Jenner Park, Neil along with representatives from Wales Veterans Football and Barry Town United were pleased to hand over a cheque for £3000 to Macmillan, who have been supporting Neil and his family in his recent battle with terminal cancer.

Neil, who resides in Barry, was keen to raise awareness of the illness, but also to generate much needed funds for the Macmillan Cancer UK Charity, and on Saturday 14th August at Jenner Park a Veterans football match provided the centre-piece of a day of fundraising activities. An auction, skilfully hosted by Cardiff City legend and Barry Town Veterans player Roger Gibbins, contributed to a grand total of £3000 for Macmillan Cancer Charity along with a further £1250 towards a short break for Neil and his partner Helen.

Chris Dickson, Sharon Corbett and Sheila Gifford, members of The Pontyclun and District Macmillan Fundraising Group gratefully accepted the cheque from Neil and Mark Barratt, chairman of Barry Town United Football Club, which will help them continue with their good work.

A strong and powerful midfielder Callum brings a lot both and off the field and is seen as a leader within the group.

Gavin Chesterfield said: “Callum is someone that all at the club think the world of, especially me. He has endured a frustrating time in recent seasons due to injury, but has remained hugely dedicated to being the best player he can be. I’m hoping for and expecting a big season from him.”

Keyon Reffell Signs For Barry Town United

Barry Town United are delighted to announce the signing of forward Keyon Reffell from Hereford FC.

Reffell moves to Jenner Park after four and a half years away from the Welsh league system, with his two year stint with The Bulls in the National League North preceded by spells at Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division side Merthyr Town and National League outfit Kidderminster Harriers. At Merthyr he was praised for his excellent ability to create numerous assists for teammates, including current Barry player Kayne McLaggon.

Before that, Reffell registered 35 Welsh Premier League appearances for Afan Lido, Camarthen Town and Port Talbot Town having worked up his way up from playing with Caerau Ely and Ely Rangers. The 28-year-old is also a former Cardiff City youth player.

Manager Gavin Chesterfield commented:

“This move has probably been 10 years in the making, in the fact Keyon was recommended to me as an 18 year old but for the right reasons the move didn’t materialise at that time.

“To Keyon’s credit he has gone on to have a very good career to date and he now joins us with high levels of experience and much quality.

“He’s a great lad who will fit right into our dressing room and is a player I know our supporters will enjoy watching.”
